Are the Goods or Services Allowed to be Sold Without VAT?

Answer: Provided the customer is Eligible, products that directly help the person cope with their condition may be bought without paying VAT.

The government tax rules are complex, and if there is any doubt over whether products or a service qualify for VAT relief, then it is the responsiblity of the company selling the item to make a final decision. That said, there are a whole range of products that we know do meet the requirements and these include:

  • Incontinence Products
  • Adjustable Beds, Chair and Stair Lifts, hoists and sanitary devices
  • Auditory Training Aids
  • Low Vision Aids
  • Medical and surgical appliances designed solely for the relief of a severe injury or a severe abnormality, such as artificial Limbs
  • Alarms
  • Motor vehicles, boats and other equipment and appliances designed solely for use by chronically sick or disabled people
  • wheelchairs
  • computer software or hardware designed specifically for disabled people
  • gadgets and devices that are designed solely to make everyday tasks easier for disabled people, like kettle tippers

You also won't have to pay VAT on spare parts and accesories for any of the above. Services that will be provided VAT free would include:

  • the servicing, maintenance and installation of disability equipment
  • adaptation work on equipment or appliances so a disabled person can use them
  • some building alterations to a disabled person's home
  • the hire of qualifying disability equipment

If you are ever unsure whether a product or service can be provided without VAT, check with the company or person you are buying from. At the end of the day they are the ones who answer to the tax man and make the final decision.

So, once you have decided whether the product or service you are buying meets the conditions, you need to check whether the other 2 Buying Requirements can also be met. To do this go back one step and click on those options.
