The Carers Allowance is a state benefit, paid by the government, to help with the income of carers who can't work full time because of their caring role. It is not a "wage" for carers.

What should you do Now?

You should make a claim for a Carers Allowance. Even if you do not qualify for the allowance because you are receiving other benefits, such as Income Support, Pension Credit, Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit, by showing you are a carer you may get the "Carer Premium" added to these Benefits.
