Do I Meet the Requirements to Claim Attendance Allowance?

Answer: You will qualify for attendance allowance if you meet all of the following requirements:

  1. You have a physical or mental disability.
  2. Your disability is severe enough for you to need help caring for yourself, or someone to supervise you, to make sure you do not endanger yourself for what most people would consider normal daily activities (e.g. Washing, eating or using the bathroom).
  3. You are 65 or over when you claim.

Normally you must have had these care or supervision needs for at least 6 months. If you are terminally ill, however, and are not expected to live longer than 6 months, you can get a higher rate of Attendance Allowance straight away.

Medical Examinations

You will not normally need a medical examintaion when you claim for the allowance. Sometimes, however, it may be necessary to check how your condition affects you. So be prepared to go for an examination if you are asked to. If you are unsure whether you meet the requirements, apply anyway.

It is better to ask and be truned down than miss out on the allowance if you are entitled.
